This class is structured like our Mixed Levels Fiction workshop, but devoted exclusively to creative nonfiction (in this context, primarily essays/personal narratives and memoir). In the first four weeks, we'll do close readings of published texts, considering how they are crafted to deliver vivid characterization, thematic resonance, a sense of strong narrative architecture, and effective, image-rich prose. During these four weeks, participants will also complete in-class exercises and take-home assignments. The final four weeks of the class we will shift our focus to participant work in a traditional workshop model, with each participant bringing in a work in progress close reading and discussion. Ultimately, workshop participants will come away with a heightened understanding of craft, feedback on their own work, and experience in discussing and critiquing others’ work in an encouraging and constructive setting.
