Writing the Essay [Workshop] Begins

Far from the five-paragraph compositions you may have churned out in high school, the essay is a remarkably fluid form, one enjoying something of a renaissance in the current publishing market. In this six-week workshop we'll read and write essays of various kinds, with a special focus on works that employ unconventional structures: the lyric essay, the list essay, the epistolary essay, the essay in borrowed form. Participants will draft essays and read and respond to participant work as well as assigned readings that model particular strategies, rhetorical modes, and aesthetics.
