Conversation in Creative Non-Fiction

What do you do with dialogue in creative nonfiction? If you're writing from memory, is it ok to put someone's words in quotation marks even if you don't have a record of exactly what was said? How can you balance a commitment to accuracy with an honest attempt to capture the spirit of what a person said? This conundrum has been handled different ways by different writers, and we'll look at a spectrum of examples—from the rigorous research of Karen Abbott to the hazy recollection of Mark Doty. We'll explore the ethics of writing creative nonfiction, the baked-in risks of writing memoir, and the responsibilities we have to tell the truth. Then we'll try some dialogue-writing exercises to sharpen our skills and make characters' words come to life.
