Scenes are the building blocks of fiction. Writers put their characters in real time, allowing readers to witness how they talk, appear, act, react, show their colors, or hold their cards. Scenes, in short, make stories come to life. This class will explore what makes scenes work through close readings of examples from both classic and contemporary literature. Participants will also engage in writing exercises around drafting and revising scenes, and receive feedback on their work from both classmates and the instructor.
