When we write about ourselves in memoir and autofiction, it is easy to weigh down the reader with darkness and drama. Humor is a way to create balance in tone. In this generative session, essayist and short-story writer Natalie Lima will be your guide in using humor to your advantage, particularly when writing about tough subject matter. Through prompts and discussion of short readings by contemporary funny writers, you'll come away with a new understanding of the diversity of ways to add levity to your work.

Natalie Lima is a Cuban-Puerto Rican writer, and a graduate of the MFA program in creative nonfiction at the University of Arizona. Her essays and fiction have been published or are forthcoming in Longreads, Guernica, Brevity, The Offing, Catapult and elsewhere. She has received fellowships from PEN America Emerging Voices, the Tin House Workshops, the VONA/Voices Workshop, the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing, and a residency from Hedgebrook in 2020. Her work has been included in Best Small Fictions, Best American Essays (Notable), and Best Online Essays by Entropy Magazine. Currently, Natalie is working on a collection of essays about sex and dating, and life as plus-size millennial woman. Find her on Instagram and Twitter @NatalieLima09.

What Our Students Say

"Natalie's workshop reflected who she is as a person! Full of knowledge, darkness + light, with tons of humor and patience with the process. I'm so glad I attended. I cannot wait to watch her journey unfold! THANK YOU."

"I have been a fan of Natalie's writing for a long time, so I signed up for her class the moment I heard about it—it did not disappoint. Natalie is a generous, engaging instructor who really finds the balance between generative prompts and bringing readings to class that illustrate the lesson. I felt comfortable pushing myself outside of my boundaries in a safe supportive environment. I would love to take another class with Natalie."

"Natalie is a beautiful gift. She selects perfect pieces that expand my view of the world and inspire me to create from an honest, authentic space."
