Young Adult fiction is a thriving genre in the publishing world. How do you draw a reader in, paint a picture, and weave a narrative that is undeniably compelling? If the story is the house, we will study all the elements to build the right foundation: voice, character, setting, plot, point of view, and the lyrical use of language. Students will be introduced to a range of technical and imaginative skills through creative exercises, assignments, and discussions. After being circulated and formally critiqued by the class in a workshop setting, at the end of the session students will complete their own first chapter and synopsis of a Young Adult novel with a strong voice and a goal of eventually being published.

After receiving an MFA from the University of Southern California, Stewart Lewis has published six critically acclaimed Young Adult and Adult Fiction novels, and several non-fiction essays online and in anthologies. His books have been translated into five languages, as well as optioned for film. He was a professor of Creative Non-Fiction at the University of Maryland for six years, and has recently relocated to Nashville, where he’s excited to become a part of the literary community. Stewart’s latest novel, One Stupid Thing, was published in the spring of 2021. In addition to writing and teaching, Stewart has toured as a professional singer songwriter, and served as a radio journalist for CBS.
