Now more than ever, genre fiction and genre authors are getting their due respect. In this class, we’ll explore horror writing and its various sub-genres: splatter, cosmic, creature, etc. You’ll be assigned readings from authors like Laird Barron, Maria Dong, and Pete Watts to name a few, and you will be encouraged to write exercises implementing tools and techniques identified in those stories. At the end of our four weeks together, you’ll take one of your exercises and write a proper short story from it.

This class is heavy on workshop and high output, but I promise it’s fun. Just think, every week, you get to try and scare your classmates! Woohoo!

Alex Gonzalez is a WGA screenwriter, author, and instructor. He has taught fiction writing at several platforms and teaches MFA level screenwriting at Long Island University. He is one of the creators of PoC satire site Flexx Magazine, horror-zine youarenotalone, and has been published in various magazines and anthologies, with his novel "Land Shark" debuting in 2020. He has representation in both his screenwriting and fiction writing and his second novel is currently on submission through FinePrint Lit.
