Ntozake Shange said she could could write best after dance class, sitting on the ground in the studio with a glass of orange juice. Deborah Hay never demonstrates choreography for dancers—she simply uses words as prompts. Terms like "vocabulary" and "language" apply to words and movement. How can we bring physical impulse into the editing process to revolutionize our work and prevent burnout?

In the workshop, we'll track physical qualities in patterns of text. We'll come away with new habits that breathe life into our writing and our bodies. Bring a page-length excerpt of work that presents a special problem in revision or needs reviving.

Lyndsay Knecht (she/her) is an artist and writer working between Texas and Los Angeles. She is interested in the ways movement and visual music can heal relationships to language. Her work in performance and video observes the dynamics of physical memory, mimicry, and truth in drama.

Lyndsay received an Agora Artists SEEDS grant for new choreographic works in 2021 and has collaborated with dance-curious artists on everything from music videos to translation of gestures into notes for a live score. Lyndsay created workshops for the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth like Sound Sketches, for which students make soundtracks to still works in the galleries. Her writing as an arts journalist has been read or heard on NPR stations, in Hyperallergic, The Art Newspaper, and other outlets. In 2022, she began writing and performance MFA studies at CalArts.
