What a character says reveals almost as much as what they don't. A smile, shake of the head, raised eyebrow—these actions can underline or even contradict what a character is saying, belying their true feelings and motives.

In this class, we will examine prose conversations and explore dialogue as a tool for getting to know our characters. We will observe the many ways humans communicate and translate gestures and facial expressions into engaging written descriptions. This class is ideal for writers looking to hone their dialogue writing skills and enhance their stories with verbal and nonverbal communications. You will be able to apply our exercises to your current work-in-progress or use them as a jump-start for a new story.

Lauren Nossett’s debut novel, The Resemblance (Flatiron Books) was listed as a 2023 Books All Georgians Should Read, nominated as a Best First Book by International Thriller Writers, and called “elegant and thoughtful” by The New York Times. Her second novel, The Professor, will be published in November 2023. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where she has recently begun hosting a weekly vegan supper club in an effort to improve her cooking skills.
