Are you aware of a space in your invented fictional world that remains too vague, whose details have been elusive, perhaps even a source of frustration because you can’t see further into it?

In this four-class workshop, writers are asked to identify a passage of no more than 1500 words in a work-in-progress that involves an interior or exterior place inhabited by a character or an agent such as the narrator.

In our four classes, writers will focus on these topics and strategies:

Class 1 – Sketching to imagine place

Class 2 – Where is this space being perceived from?

Class 3 – How does a body move inside that space?

Class 4 – Non-visual ways of perceiving space: touch, hearing, taste, smell, proprioception–or the awareness of the body in its space, and spatial orientation and balance.

Each of these four topics will provide possibilities for re-seeing, re-considering and revising your selected passage four times over the course of the workshop, as well as to help focus group discussion and manuscript review during each of our four meetings.
