Existing in a human body is a profound, painful, and pleasurable experience. In this workshop, we will use a series of exploratory writing exercises, in-class readings, and group discussions to explore the ways language can help us tell the stories that we carry in our bodies. How are certain bodies treated on a societal or personal scale? What happens to us after experiencing bodily trauma or joy? How can we communicate these experiences with compassion and precision? We will look at examples of how other writers (such as Nora Ephron, Mary Oliver, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and many more) have depicted the body in their prose and poetry, and then tap into our own perspectives and imaginations through a series of thoughtfully designed prompts. Over these four weeks, learn how to infuse your writing with sensory power and deep exploration.
