Young Adult fiction is a thriving genre in the current publishing world. If the story is the house, we will study all the elements to build the right foundation: voice, character, setting, plot, point of view, and the lyrical use of language. How do you draw a reader in, paint a picture, and weave a narrative that is undeniably compelling? Students will be introduced to a range of technical and imaginative skills through creative exercises, reading assignments, and discussions. After being circulated and formally critiqued by the class in a workshop setting, students will each revise and complete their own first chapter of a Young Adult novel that contains a voice readers will want to follow anywhere.

After receiving an MFA from the University of Southern California, Stewart Lewis has published eight critically acclaimed Young Adult and Adult Fiction novels, as well as several non-fiction essays online and in anthologies. His books have been translated into five languages. His latest YA novel, ONE STUPID THING, is currently becoming a feature film. He was a professor of Creative Non-Fiction at the University of Maryland for six years, and taught Creative Writing in the Honors program at Belmont University for five.
