There’s little more painful than explaining a joke, but for writers interested in using humor in their work, it’s helpful to understand what makes an incident, a reaction, or a line of dialogue funny. In this workshop, we’ll explore the tools writers use to make readers laugh, from irony and exaggeration to satire and shock. Through generative writing exercises we’ll try our own hands at employing humor in our work (be it of the ha-ha variety or subtler forms). Students will leave with practical ideas for how to make humor work in their writing and plenty of words on the page.

What Our Students Say

"Lucas is a wonderful instructor -- generous, generative, and inspirational -- and I'm so grateful for his hard won insights."

"Lucas is a wonderful instructor. I am as novice as they come and left the course with the confidence to continue writing and some tangible, helpful tips that I will put into action."

"Lucas' exercises are insane! And I mean that in the best way. They truly shake you out of your comfort zone and get you to start doing the damn thing. It's amazing."
