As a teenager, Susannah announced that she planned to open a record store when she grew up. Replied her mom: “I thought you wanted to be a writer.” As mothers often are, Susannah’s was correct. But some vestige of that entrepreneurial spirit led her, after decades of writing and teaching, to cofound the Porch with Katie McDougall.
In crafting our foundational program of classes and events for adults, Susannah drew from more than a decade of college teaching, first at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned her MFA in Writing, then at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. She also came to Porch-building with a background in freelance journalism and editorial work for magazines and alt-weeklies, which served in developing our brand and communications.
Susannah curates our Visiting Writers Series, assists with our biannual literary magazine, SWING, and occasionally teaches for us (which she loves). Her essays and fiction have appeared in the
Best American Science and Nature Writing,
Lit Hub,
Longreads,
Joyland, and
Guernica, among other publications, and she’s received support from the Tennessee Arts Commission, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Hambidge, Ragdale, and the Vermont Center for Creative Arts.
While the record-store thing clearly isn’t going to happen, Susannah’s flame for music continues to burn bright. Her latest novel,
The Come Apart (TriQuarterly Books, 2026), tells the story of an indie-rocker at a crossroads — there’s a
playlist — and displays her abiding interest in artistic identity and the mysteries and methods of creative process.
Curiosity is Susannah’s superpower; the natural world is her sanctuary;
FIELD TRIP is her delight-driven Substack; East Nashville is home sweet home. She also loves a semi-colon.
