When readers pick up a romance novel, they want to escape into a world where everyone gets their happily ever after. However, for romance writers, creating an emotionally satisfying journey toward an expected ending requires careful plotting, pacing, and a deep understanding of reader expectations. In this class, we will discuss the romance genre as a whole, including tropes, current trends, and misconceptions. Then, through discussions, writing prompts, and the option to submit your work for feedback, you will learn how to create compelling characters, develop conflict, outline, and draft your own story through the lens of romance. We’ll also discuss topics like how to write spicy scenes (that aren’t cringy), avoiding “insta-love” cliches, and creating couples that readers root for. This class is suitable for experienced writers new to the romance genre or dedicated romance readers looking to take the plunge into writing.

Sara Holifield is an indie author who writes paranormal fantasy romance under the pen name Avalon Griffin. She is the author of the novel Unbound by Shadows, its sequel To Dwell in Shadows and the short story The Vampire’s Library, which was published in Once Upon a Book Club’s 2024 Book-Club-Mas anthology. When not writing, she can be found traveling the globe in search of kitschy roadside attractions, off-beat museums, and cryptozoology legends. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with her husband and a crew of formerly feral cats.
