Anger is a secondary emotion that is typically felt but rarely understood. This complex emotion often highlights our vulnerabilities and insecurities, which forces our bodies to contract and our minds to become influenced by reactions that are intended for our protection, but which often fall short in their expressions. When experienced in its raw form, anger can either be limiting or liberating to the recipient. In this class, students will be guided through prompts that reimagine triggers as tools for self-advocacy. Students will be given the skills to better define their frustrations that are rooted in injustice, and develop the capacity for their writing to serve as a catalyst to enact change. This class is open to writers of all genres, backgrounds, and experience.

Alexis Özden (Öz) is an organizer, poet, and mixed-media artist who explores generational trauma, somatic healing, and gender expression in their work. Öz currently facilitates the Nashville Radical Library, which is a free lending library located at Random Sample that provides the Nashville community with access to radical literature. Öz also routinely hosts and participates in communal discussions and spoken-word events that take place throughout the city, namely in association with WXNA-101.5 FM, the Nashville Poetry Library, and the Porch. They hold memberships with Nour Nashville, the 11:11 Art Collective, and Buchanan Arts.

What Our Students Say

""I applaud Alexis for providing a safe and helpful space to approach such challenging topics, and I appreciated the rich discussion and invitations to respond in writing."

"This course was a great opportunity to get in touch with my emotions surrounding a difficult topic and connect with others going through similar things. I was grateful to Öz for facilitating such vulnerable and open discussion and guiding us so graciously through such thoughtful prompts."

"This class was a meaningful part of my healing journey. The content was thoughtful and practical, but what really stood out was the instructor Öz’s genuine empathy and passion. You could tell they truly cared, and that made all the difference."
