Are you a novelist who is feeling a little line-curious? A short story writer who wants to go even shorter? A flash fiction fan who is wondering if they have been writing prose poems this whole time?
This National Poetry Month, prose pros can take a chance on lineation, form, and sound in this poetry workshop organized around the overlap between fiction and poetry. This beginner-friendly course is made to demystify contemporary poetry, encourage literary play, and bring verse down to earth. Participants can write and workshop up to three poems through prompts and writing activities built around familiar fiction concepts like character, plot, and setting.

Em Palughi is a queer poet from South Alabama. You can find her work in Gulf Coast, Black Warrior Review, Foglifter, The Southern Poetry Anthology: Alabama, Apricity Press, and elsewhere. She was the winner of the 2025 Plentitudes Poetry Prize and holds an MFA in Poetry from Vanderbilt University where she was awarded the 2024 Kathryn Sedberry Prize. She lives in Nashville with her fiancé and an oversized cat.
Em is new to The Porch. Welcome!
