Meter is one of the most difficult aspects of poetry for beginners. How did Shakespeare and Robert Frost write in those perfect iambs? What even is an iamb? Or a trochee or dactyl? Why is "pentameter" ten syllables and not five? In this class we will learn how to recognize meter in poetry and use it to make our verses sound and feel as strong and moving to the reader or listener as they are to us as writers.
Eric Alan Ponce was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Having graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in philosophy and creative writing, Eric was also the recipient of the Merrill Moore prize in fiction. As a student in the bilingual MFA program at the University of Texas at El Paso, Eric studied in an international network of writers and artists. Along with fiction published by Huizache and the Rio Grande Review, Eric's criticism has been published by BookPage and is forthcoming in the Whitney Review.
