Getting stuck while knee-deep in a project is a common occurrence, and sometimes when the work is memoir or creative nonfiction, the block is emotional in origin. This class will address that block by altering your current story perspective and centering the epistolary form. The epistolary is a writing form that pulls the narrative along through different forms of communication like letters, emails, diary entries, and text messages. In this generative workshop, we'll read through and discuss examples of ways different authors approach the epistolary, with ample time for us to collective write our own based on varying prompts. This allows you to fully invest in one point of view before shifting to another, creating both a well rounded narrative, hopefully providing an opportunity to get past that writers block.
Zuri White-Gibson (she/her) is a Black, Queer hybrid-genre artist. Her creative work lives at the intersections of creative nonfiction, poetry, and both digital & analog collage. Zuri’s nonfiction essay work can be seen in publications like Prism and autostraddle, and her collage work has been featured in shows with The Chronic Pain Project (Portland, OR) and Black Queer GRITS (Atlas Gallery, Richmond, VA). After this summer, Zuri will have her MFA in Creative Writing from Randolph College.
