In C.S. Lewis’s 1958 New York Times essay “Sometimes Fairy Stories May Say Best What’s to be Said,” he asserts: “Everything began with the image.” In this workshop, we will immerse ourselves in the images that captivate us from our favorite fairytales. Through a variety of imaginative writing practices, we will follow the threads of wisdom these images offer us today. While it may feel like a childish pastime to linger in the realm of fairy godmothers, talking animals, and enchanted castles, the symbols of fairytales hold a great deal of creative power for readers and writers of all ages. Whether you are drawn to poetry, fantasy, fiction, or memoir, connecting with the metaphors and motifs from fairytales can deepen your writing and offer insight into your life. You will leave this workshop with inspiration and guidance for writing the fairytale that amplifies the truths of your own life.
