Over the course of six weeks, we'll cover in-depth the processes of submitting your work to literary magazines, small presses, and traditional publishing houses, creating the necessary materials as we go. We'll practice writing book reviews, cover letters, and query letters/proposals, as well as discuss working with agents, editors, publicists, illustrators, and your readership at large. Students will workshop one short-form work and get class feedback on the first page of a novel-length work (including nonfiction and collections). All genres are welcome!

  • In-Class Writing Lift: Medium
  • Homework: Required
  • Workshopping Drafts: Intensive

Savannah Brooks earned her MFA from Hamline University and spent the first decade of her career working in publishing, first as an editor and then as an agent. After contracting a disabling case of Long COVID, she quasi-retired from the field and now works as a writing instructor and a reviewer for the Independent Book Review. Her work has been featured in the Guardian, Cagibi, and Red Rock Review, among two dozen other publications. You can find out more at savannahbrooks.com.
