The coveted New York Times column can be a career building platform for writers. Many have secured book deals based on being published in this forum. Do you have a non-fictional take on "modern love"? Did you know you can submit without an agent and they read and respond to every submission? In this class we will dissect different approaches that made the cut, in terms of voice, style, flow, content, and "hook". In addition to some in-class writing prompts, we will workshop each other's attempt, in hopes of every student developing a compelling essay to submit by the end of class.
After receiving an MFA from the University of Southern California, Stewart Lewis has published eight critically acclaimed Young Adult and Adult Fiction novels, as well as several non-fiction essays online and in anthologies. His books have been translated into five languages. His latest YA novel, ONE STUPID THING, is currently becoming a feature film. He was a professor of Creative Non-Fiction at the University of Maryland for six years, and taught Creative Writing in the Honors program at Belmont University for five.
