In this workshop, we endeavor to explore the interaction between two mysterious and intricate creative processes: the writing process, and the process an actor undertakes when bringing a character to life. We will look at a few different texts that examine the ideas behind each process, as well as excerpts from scripts to see these ideas in action. We will also consider the collaborative aspects of this creative relationship, both on established texts that have already been produced as plays or films, and also in current professional contexts when a script is in the process of production as a film, television show, or a new play.

We invite any writer interested in either of these processes to explore the co-mingling of these crafts from new perspectives. This course is especially of interest for scriptwriters interested in tackling their craft with additional perspective from a professional actor, as well as actors who are interested in developing their writing skill and exploring the creative process from a writer's perspective. All writers at any level are welcome!

JR Robles is an actor, writer, and filmmaker based in Nashville, TN. Lately, he has been writing about heartbreak, fatherhood, body image, and pie, among other topics. He is a recent Porch Prize finalist, Oz Arts Art Wire Writing Fellow, and Breaking Waves Theater Company Writing Fellow. He is also co-producer of the Dare to Fail Short Film Showcase.

What Our Students Say

"JR was an amazing instructor. He welcomed screenwriters of all levels, including beginners like myself. He was warm, encouraging, and spoke out of experience as a writer and actor. His writing exercise was unique and memorable. I would definitely take another class with him in the future!"

"JR was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable! I'm very new to screenwriting/acting, but as a writer who's incorporating aspects of those worlds into my manuscript, JR broke it down simply while touching on the most important points. He kept the class engaging and fun, and I came out of it with a lot more direction. Thanks, JR!"

"I appreciated the different perspectives JR gave on writing when it comes to acting. I had never thought about the actor’s relationship to the other characters, or how the actor might approach the relationship. It certainly changed the way I look at dialogue and how that dialogue can come across to the reader/actor!"
