Pitch Perfect: How to Get Published in the Nashville Scene

Saturday

1:00 - 2:30PM

The Porch House at 2811 Dogwood Pl., Nashville, TN 37204

Do you want to get published in the Nashville Scene? If you’ve ever wanted to write a film review, music review, profile on a local business or artist, or personal essay for the weekly paper, but wondered how to go about it, this is the class for you.

Join Scene staff reporter Hannah Herner as she demystifies the process of pitching and getting published in the weekly newspaper. She'll go over the bi-weekly magazine's sections: News, Music, Food, Film, Arts and Culture, Critics’ Picks and Vodka Yonic, as well as who the readership is. This class will teach you what makes a strong pitch and common pitfalls to avoid. She'll also go over payment models and how to get involved with the Scene's sister publications: Nfocus, Nashville Post and Williamson Scene.

The class is open to writers of all experience levels and interests. Come with a list of ideas and leave with a strong pitch to share. (Note: This class is intended for writers looking to pitch and write their own pieces—not for those hoping to suggest story ideas for other writers to cover.)

Hannah Herner is a reporter for Nashville Post and Nashville Scene. An alumna of Ohio State University, she has also worked for The Contributor and spent time in Americorps and as a freelance writer. While most of her time is spent on newswriting, she also has a soft spot for personal essays. Hannah currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee and loves to host themed gatherings in her high-rise apartment. You can read her work at scrunchiecoded.substack.com
