Tennessee, In Your Own Words: A Class + Open Mic

The Porch House at 2811 Dogwood Pl., Nashville, TN 37204

Join us for an evening of writing, reflection, and community in support of Humanities Tennessee, the nonprofit that has run the Southern Festival of Books for 36 years. With federal funding at risk, this is a chance to give back through the power of storytelling.

From 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., writer and educator Yurina Yoshikawa will lead a generative writing class inspired by personal memories of life in Tennessee. We’ll read excerpts from notable Tennessee authors, explore the ways place shapes story, and dive into prompt-driven freewriting.

After a short break and stage setup, the evening continues with an open mic starting at 7:30 p.m., hosted by Yurina. Participants are invited to share a short piece (5–6 minutes) ideally reflecting on their relationship to Tennessee—whether through memory, place, people, or change. You’re welcome to read something drafted during the class or bring a piece you’ve written previously.

$30 for Class Only

$20 for Open Mic Only

$50 for Class + Open Mic

All proceeds go to Humanities Tennessee. Space is limited for both the class and participation in the open mic.
